Seems like the SX110 shipped without a User Manual. (Lots of software/printing manuals, no information about what the little icons mean, etc.)

I tried to find one online, and nearly got into a rip website. Even Canon's pdf doesn't open.

Anyone know where I can find any manual that describes the various settings? I don't need a lot; even another similar camera is fine.

Shucks! I sent it out yesterday. I may have tried that or at least attempted to, but I may have had the adapter in.

I know I did something unusual in the sequence of plugging and powering before the last upload and was racking my brain trying to remember what it was so I could reverse it. Now that you mention it, that may have been it-tuning on the camera before plugging in the adapter. You know what they say about getting older, "memory is the first thing to go".

Like some other devices that run on battery that use an adapter, if you start with one and switch to the other mid stream they may get hung up and you have to undo it by going back to how you started and powering off in the same mode.

Based on their e-mail, it seems they may cover it under warranty. The first e-mail asked for the sales receipt to ensure warranty coverage, (HAH!)but I e-mailed them back and they did say they saw that I registered it online.

Thanks again for all your effort aberrant. I really appreciate it. Have a nice weekend.

torotoro,

Try this (from another site):

"I got mine to work by connecting the USB cord to my laptop, putting in the battery, and pressing play. It worked! And after that the camera turns on normally."

You can read the entire thread here:
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-SD750-Wont-turn-Help/forum/Fx1X2CGYGWU8J97/Tx1VAL54ZWEHK2N/1?_encoding=UTF8&asin=B000NK6INU

If that solution doesn't work, I would still try to get it repaired under warranty. I've been successful a number of times having my electronics covered even though they were a month or so past the warranty coverage date. Wouldn't hurt to try.

torotoro,

I would suggest sending your camera to Canon for repair. Is it still under warranty? Maybe someone else will chime in here, but that seems like the best option at this point.

Hi torotoro,

First off, welcome to the forum! Regarding your A1000 problem, have you tried to reset the camera while plugged into the adapter? There should be a camera reset option in the menu. If that doesn't correct the issue, I'm not sure what the problem could be, although if it's an internal error, you'd have to send your camera in for repair.

Another thing to look at is the contacts in the battery compartment. Are they corroded or damaged in any way?

Try the reset first and then report back. Good luck!

I can only power on my A1000 with the adapter (CA-PS800). I have confirmed that the batteries are good. Funny thing is everything was fine prior to uploading pix to the puter. Not sure if I disconnected power prior to powering off but I've tried every combination with the adapter but... no work. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you can. There might be a newer version, but this one looks pretty recent. Here's a link to download the software: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/8204/canon-imagebrowser

The A480 can use these types of cards: SD/SDHC Memory Card, MultiMediaCard, MMC Plus Card, HC MMC Plus Card

Hi everyone. I like to collect pictures shot in dramatic lighting, the artistic kinds that are probably easiest to achieve in a studio with a DSLR. I only have a point-and-shoot, and, I'm afraid it's a Lumix and not a Power Shot, but I had a Power Shot question and so I came here. I hope others come soon. I would love to discuss this so much more. Please, if you see this, go have a look at the question I posted.

Cheers,

I have always loved those dramatic pictures where the light has a major dance part and the background just somehow goes away. It didn't take too long to find the info and the name: Low-key photography. Unfortunately, most of the information on how to do it included things like aperture settings and shutter speeds. Looking down at my humble P&S, I wondered if there would any way to still make it work. I've done some experimenting, very rudimentary so far, involving a dark kitchen, a still life, and a naked bulb stuffed into a narrow cardboard box. So far, it is too harsh, but I might be onto something.

Has anyone else tried this?

Not everyone has an SLR, and there are even simple point-and-shoot PowerShots. Now, I like to shoot indoors but I hate, really really hate what flash does. I can't decide if I hate the way it flattens the person or if it is the shadow it throws that outlines the body. With a P&S, I have less ability to control things, but I've begun to experiment with keeping the flash turned off.

(side note, my next experiment will be to put a plastic shopping bag over my flash, so if that turns out well, I might allow the flash to be turned back on)

So, I'm experimenting with using brooder lights (those clamp-on shop lights with an aluminum bell that directs the heat down to the chicks) with various wattages and colors of bulbs at different distances and while attaching various diffusers (all home-made).

Unfortunately it's not possible to PM a user without being logged in first. I believe this is how most forums work. I'm in the process of fixing the registrations so users won't have to contact me directly. Please understand that the forum software I am using is new and not as established as vbulletin or phpbb. However, it is very clean, simple, and user friendly. New developments for the software are in the works, so look for some new features in the future!

The forum used to have the feature where you could upload your own avatar, but it broke with the current version of the forum software, so I had to disable it.

The reason why some users have avatars including myself, is not seniority, but something called a gravatar. Check out this site for more info: http://en.gravatar.com/

Essentially, you can use this same avatar across multiple sites, but you have to use the same email address for both the gravatar and when you sign up on a particular site. Hope that makes sense. Their website will explain everything.

The things I want to talk about are Low-Key lighting, High-key lighting, and Turning off the Flash. I think these things can be tricky without an SLR, and might make for interesting discussion.

I'm new here and like the site, but the format isn't as familiar to me and, well, as you know, I had some trouble getting registered. If I hadn't had a question that needed answering, I might easily have given up. Your thought of going over to vbulletin or something similar might not be a bad idea, though I really like the clean lines of this one.

If you went to invisionfree, I would be willing to skin it for you go have a similar feel, though I might not be able to get the heading of the Topic to look just like it looks there at the top.

Anyway, I'm hoping you get more members. 85 posts in 13 months by only 13 members (out of 45) so far, about 1 post every 4-5 days, which doesn't bode well for my getting my question answered.

But I'm staying as long as the site does.

A friend and I will be taking some pictures together this weekend, I on my Lumix and she on her Powershot A480. Before she leaves, we want to exchange pics by just downloading them from our cameras to both computers. She seems to think that I need to download Zoombrowser EX to be able to suck the images off of her camera, but trying to find that to download (or ImageBrowser for the Mac) has not worked. All I have found are updates, so I suspect I have to have the original from her CD first.

However, I have a little card reader that works just great with my PNY SD card. Does anyone know:

1) Can I get ImageBrowser for my MacBook?
2) Does the A480 use an SD card and so should my card reader be able to read it?

Thank you very much.

Hi,
Did you erase the name on purpose? I don't see it in the BW version. Are you using Photoshop? I see some detail in that shadowed part, an you might be able to select that area and use the Color Enhance menu to lighten just that area. You might also be able to darken the top of the head that way. I wouldn't suggest too much in either case, and feather the edges of the selection to avoid making it seem too obvious. I would say do as much as you can in color first and then convert to grayscale.

Not that it is something you would have on you on a trip to the zoo, but I was just thinking that if you had a white card or one with tinfoil on it, you might have been able to bounce some of the light in the room onto the front of it, not much, but it might have made a little difference.

Cheers,
Bantymom

Paul, Scoopnewf, and others,

I've decided to keep this site around for awhile :) . The group blog idea is a good one and I'll have to look into that. My question to you is, what are the most important features that you look for in a site like this?

Hey Twitch,

I definitely like the third one the best. The composition is better than the other two and the natural color is pleasing to the eye. What model powershot are you using?

Scoopnewf,

Welcome to the forum! I won't close the site if I have enough interest, so hopefully more people will chime in and let me know what they think.

Anyways, as far as your photography goes, I'm not to familiar with that powershot model (I owned a G9), but my advice would be to shoot in manual mode and stay within ISO 100-400. The lower the ISO, the sharper your images will be and the less noise you'll have. If your not comfortable shooting in manual, at least shoot in aperture priority (AV) or shutter priority (TV). This gives you more control over the image and it's more fun. If you shoot in shutter priority (TV), then play around with slower shutter speeds such as 30th sec and 60th sec. What you could also do to get some interesting images is set your shutter speed to 30th/sec and then pan the camera with the action while releasing the shutter. This will cause the background to blur, but your subject to be in focus. It takes some practice, but you'll get the hang of it. This link gives you some basic info on the technique: Panning Technique

Have fun in Disney World!

I'm sorry to here that you may be closing this site. I just got registered & was hoping that this is were I could gain some insight into using my newly acquired SX1 IS.

I'm basically a photography virgin & really could use the help from experts like yourself.

I'm taking my family to Disney world next week. Do you have any suggestions for taking great shots of my kid on the roller coasters?

Thanks.
